On November 25th, 2024, RFA media reported heightened tensions along the Thai-Myanmar border near Doi Nong Luang and Doi Hua Ma, opposite Pai District, Mae Hong Son.
The United Wa State Army (UWSA) reinforced its bases with heavy weaponry despite Thai orders to withdraw from disputed areas.
Earlier, on November 18th-19th, senior UWSA representatives met Thai officials in Chiang Mai to address issues including drug trafficking and alleged unauthorized incursions into Thai territory.
The Thai side requested the withdrawal of UWSA troops stationed in Thailand, with the Wa delegation pledging to report back to their command in Panghsang within 30 days.
However, on November 20th, UWSA’s 778th Brigade reportedly ordered its forces to map Thai military positions and forward intelligence to its headquarters. In response, Thailand’s Third Army Region prepared artillery positions to support ground troops if conflict arises.
UWSA sources rejected Thailand’s demands, insisting the disputed areas are neither Thai territory nor under Myanmar’s control.
They warned against Thai incursions, stating they would defend their sovereignty. The standoff, rooted in historical territorial disputes, has persisted unresolved for over a decade, according to RFA media.
