Thailand is preparing to celebrate a landmark moment as it becomes the first Southeast Asian country and the third in Asia to legalize marriage equality. Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai, on December 2, delivered a keynote speech during the “Marriage Equality Day” press event at Siam Paragon, reaffirming the government’s commitment to equal rights for all citizens, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The marriage equality law, enacted under the leadership of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, provides legal recognition and protections for LGBTQIA+ couples. The legislation reflects Thailand’s dedication to diversity and inclusivity across gender identities, ethnicities, and religions. The milestone was achieved through collaboration among political parties and civil society, as well as the steadfast advocacy of LGBTQIA+ communities in raising awareness and promoting acceptance.
To honor this historic occasion, “Marriage Equality Day” will take place on January 23, 2025, with a large-scale event hosted by Bangkok Pride at Paragon Hall, Siam Paragon. LGBTQIA+ couples will have the opportunity to officiate their unions and participate in various activities celebrating love and equality.
The achievement represents Thailand’s progressive advancements in human rights and its commitment to fostering an equitable society where all citizens are treated with dignity and respect.
