On December 2nd, 2024, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa provided updates on the detention of a Thai fishing vessel and its four Thai crew by the Myanmar Navy on November 30th.
The incident involved 31 crew members, including four Thais and 27 Myanmar nationals. Myanmar authorities allege the boat entered Myanmar waters, though the specifics remain unclear.
Thailand’s Department of East Asian Affairs summoned Myanmar’s Ambassador to Bangkok, who reportedly expressed regret over the incident and pledged to relay the matter to Myanmar’s government.
Foreign Minister Maris also contacted Myanmar Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Than Swe, who expressed concern and vowed to fully cooperate with Thailand.
Meanwhile, the Thai Ambassador in Yangon is traveling to Naypyidaw to meet Myanmar’s Foreign Ministry officials.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that Thailand lodged a protest, emphasizing that the detained fishing vessel was unarmed.
He noted the Thai-Myanmar Border Committee has engaged both sides to address the issue diplomatically.
While the maritime boundary in the area has long been contentious, the Thai government insists the focus should remain on safeguarding the crew and resolving the matter amicably.
Efforts are underway to ensure the swift return of the four Thai crew members.
