On December 4th, 2024, government spokesperson Mr. Jirayu Huangsap announced that Tom Yum Kung, Thailand’s iconic spicy shrimp soup, has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The recognition was granted during the 19th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asunción, Paraguay.
Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her gratitude in a video message, calling the recognition a proud moment for Thailand and its people. She thanked Paraguay for hosting the event and the UNESCO committee for honoring Thailand’s cultural heritage.
Tom Yum Kung, celebrated for its health benefits, originates from the traditional wisdom of riverside communities in central Thailand. Passed down through generations, it reflects harmony with nature, incorporating locally sourced herbs and ingredients. This culinary masterpiece highlights Thailand’s Soft Power and resonates globally as a beloved dish, according to Jirayu.
Thai PM emphasized that the recognition not only supports Thailand’s food security, health, and economic growth but also promotes sustainability and social cohesion. She invited people worldwide to savor Tom Yum Kung at Thai restaurants or try cooking it at home, celebrating its rich heritage and unforgettable flavors.
Jirayu added that this achievement further elevates Thailand’s global reputation as a country rich in history, culture, and world-renowned cuisine, boosting the value of Thai products and tourism.
