Phu Thap Boeks Paragliding Halted After Chinese Tourists Death

Phetchabun —

On December 5th, 2024, a Chinese tourist tragically lost his life in a paragliding accident at Phu Thap Boek, Phetchabun. Huang Hao, a 56-year-old paraglider from Jiangsu, China, fell to his death after his parachute collapsed mid-flight, crashing onto the rocky terrain below.

Lom Kao Police temporarily suspended paragliding activities at the popular spot, citing safety concerns. The victim was part of a group of over 10 foreign paragliders who had organized recreational flights in the area, scheduled to continue until late December.

Reports revealed that the group’s activities were coordinated by local organizers, providing transportation, accommodations, and flight logistics. However, no official permits had been secured for the use of Phu Thap Boek as a launch site.

Huang and his fellow paragliders entered Thailand on tourist visas, which do not explicitly permit such high-risk activities. Authorities are facing communication difficulties with the group, as many are reluctant to cooperate, fearing legal consequences.

Provincial officials, led by Phetchabun Governor Saranyu Meethongkham, reached out to the Chinese Embassy to assist with insurance claims and arrangements for the victim’s family. Meanwhile, Huang’s body remains at Lom Kao Hospital pending further procedures.

Phu Thap Boek, with its stunning 800-meter elevation, is recognized globally as a premier and challenging paragliding destination. Annual events have been held there for three consecutive years, often attracting international enthusiasts.

However, a similar fatal incident had previously occurred last year paragliding at the site, prompting calls for stricter safety regulations and better oversight, according to Thai national media.
