The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.
These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We publish many stories daily and it is easy to lose track of important events or changes in our area. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket and nearby provinces.
They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, December 2nd to Sunday December 8th, 2024.
- An American man was arrested at the Phuket International Airport for 21 days of overstay.

2. His Royal Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Royal Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana presided over the 36th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta.

Her Majesty Queen Suthida took part in practice racing in the IRC Zero class on the keelboat THA72.
3. Thalang – A 33-year-old Myanmar national, Mr. Thura Kyaw, died after being electrocuted by a leaking power pole on a roadside in Thep Krasattri.
The Thalang Electricity Authority determined that the power pole was leaking 220 volts of electricity. The power pole system in the area is managed by the Phuket Highway Office.
4. A pickup truck owned by the Samui Marine Police slid into the sea on Samui Island.
It was unclear how the truck was later removed from the sea although many tourists found the incident humorous and took multiple photos.
5. Sixteen vendor stalls that were encroaching on Freedom Beach in Karon were demolished .

The beach is in the area of the Nak Kerd Mountain Reserve Forest. The beach is being planned to officially enact a ‘Recreation Forest’ project.
