On December 16th, 2024, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) launched an investigation into alleged misconduct behind Thaksin Shinawatra’s 180-day hospital stay.
Top officials are accused of improperly transferring the high-profile inmate from Bangkok Remand Prison to the Police General Hospital without genuine illness to prevent his imprisonment.
Mr. Saroj Phuengramphan, the NACC spokesperson, revealed that the commission accepted the case against Mr. Sahakarn Petchanarin, the Director-General of the Department of Corrections, and related officials.
The NACC deemed the evidence sufficient to proceed with a formal inquiry under the Anti-Corruption Act 2018, Section 51. The investigation involves 12 officials from the Department of Corrections and the Police General Hospital.
Additional individuals will be investigated if further evidence emerges, according to the NACC spokesperson.
