On December 16th, 2024, Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed reports from Malaysian media regarding Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim’s informal appointment of Thaksin Shinawatra as an advisor to the ASEAN chairmanship.
Paetongtarn emphasized that Thaksin’s experience as Thailand’s prime minister for six years and his close ties with Anwar made him a valuable advisor. She stated that collaboration among ASEAN leaders, past and present, would benefit the region, particularly in economic, tourism, and border-related discussions.
Regarding peace efforts in Thailand’s southern border provinces, Paetongtarn affirmed that Malaysia has been supporting ongoing dialogue. She reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving peace as soon as possible, with a leadership meeting scheduled for February or March 2025 in Thailand.
Malaysia is set to assume the ASEAN chair in 2025.
Additionally, Paetongtarn stated that both countries have agreed to reject violence and will work closely to push forward peace talks and regional cooperation.
