On December 17th, 2024, Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra provided an update on the flood relief efforts across 12 southern provinces via a post on X. She reportedly admitted the situation remains critical this year as the region faces severe flooding.
While visiting Nakhon Si Thammarat, Paetongtarn chaired a meeting with governors, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and related agencies. Key measures include delivering food, clean water, medicine, and emergency shelters to affected residents, expediting a 9,000-baht financial relief package per household, and urgently restoring damaged infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and water systems.
The Ministry of the Interior was directed to invoke the Disaster Prevention Act to coordinate military personnel, resources, and equipment to accelerate recovery efforts. Authorities were also instructed to monitor risk areas, issue timely warnings, and implement strict safety measures in natural tourist destinations to ensure public safety.
Paetongtarn expressed gratitude to officials, military, police, private organizations, volunteers, and foundations for their swift response and stressed that safety must remain the top priority in all relief operations.
