Prime Minister Orders Action on PM2.5 Air Pollution

PRESS RELEASE:

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has instructed agencies to tackle the PM2.5 air pollution crisis, coordinating efforts across key ministries such as Natural Resources and Environment, Agriculture, Interior, and Transport, alongside the Royal Thai Police. The measures target pollution sources, including agricultural burning, vehicle emissions, and industrial activities, to mitigate health and environmental impacts.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has been tasked with implementing preventive measures in collaboration with related units. Projections for 2025 suggest a less severe PM2.5 problem compared to 2023, attributed to strengthened mitigation efforts. The Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation has also deployed rainmaking operations in Bangkok, nearby provinces, and northern regions to combat the haze. Between December 2 and December 16, PM2.5 levels were reported to be lower than during the same period last year.

Building on the Royal Rainmaking Principles introduced by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, the department’s 2025 weather modification plan includes creating cloud cover with sodium chloride agents, enhancing cloud absorption capacity with calcium-based formulas, and dispersing particulate matter through the atmospheric inversion layer using dry ice or water sprays.

The daily operations aim to improve air quality during the New Year celebrations, supporting public health and tourism.

PM2.5 pollution has been designated a national priority, with long-term solutions underway to improve air quality and promote healthier environments, benefiting public health and tourism as Thailand looks toward the coming year.
