At 7:30 PM on January 1st, 2025, a Betong-Bangkok chartered tour bus crashed into a tree along Highway 41 in Chaiya District, Surat Thani, leaving five dead and dozens injured.
Surat Thani Governor Teerut Supaviboonphon urgently directed all relevant agencies to assist in the aftermath of the tragic accident involving a chartered tour bus returning from Betong, Yala, to Samut Sakhon.
The bus driver reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and overturned into a tree near Pa We Intersection, according to the police. Most of the injured, around 30 elderly passengers, were trapped inside.
Rescue teams rushed them to Chaiya Hospital (12 people) and Tha Chang Hospital (18 people). Five fatalities were found inside the wreckage.
The driver, 47-year-old Mr. Suthep, stated that the bus slid off a curve and hit the tree, leaving him unaware until the crash occurred. Police have detained the driver and his assistant for questioning at Chaiya police station for further legal action.
