Japanese Tourist Fined 3,000 Baht After Chiang Mai Lantern Incident

Chiang Mai —

On January 2nd, 2025, Thai police fined a Japanese tourist, 3,000 baht for attempting to release a sky lantern near Tha Phae Gate, Chiang Mai. The area is strictly prohibited for lantern releases due to fire hazards for densely populated residential areas.

Mr. Hirano, 31, reportedly visiting Chiang Mai with his family for the 2025 Countdown Festival, had been in Thailand since December 28th, 2024.

Around 12:30 AM after the countdown event, he allegedly attempted to release the lantern beside the square, believing the prohibition applied only to the main square. When police intervened, Hirano initially became upset, leading to a brief confrontation. However, with the help of an interpreter, he understood the restriction and immediately apologized.

On January 1st, around 7:30 PM, Hirano personally met the officer involved to apologize in person. The officer accepted the apology and did not press further charges.

However, police proceeded with a legal violation for disobeying official orders, which resulted in a 3,000 baht fine.

According to the police, Hirano expressed deep regret for the misunderstanding and pledged to respect Thai laws in the future. He thanked authorities for their understanding and reaffirmed his love for Thailand, promising to return as a responsible visitor. He reportedly departed for Japan on January 2nd.
