Pattani —
On January 1st, 2025, the Department of Corrections reported an inmate brawl at Pattani Central Prison, resulting in 12 injuries, including two in critical condition, and one death caused by a sharp metal object.
The altercation occurred in Zone 1 around 11:00 AM. Prison officials quickly intervened and transported the injured to Pattani Hospital. The fight reportedly stemmed from a dispute during a football match organized to promote relaxation and exercise among inmates.
The Department of Corrections has suspended activities, taken disciplinary action against those involved, and initiated an investigation. Measures to enhance prison security and prevent future incidents have been ordered.
Justice Minister Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong confirmed the situation is under control, with inmates relocated to separate facilities in Songkhla and Narathiwat.
A preliminary investigation revealed that inmates had hidden sharp metal objects underground in Zone 1. Despite ongoing surprise inspections, these items went undetected. The Department has instructed intensified searches and legal action against those responsible.
