Pattani Authorities Tighten Security After Bomb Blast Injures Police and Civilians

Pattani —

On January 3rd, 2025, security checkpoints were established across Pattani to intercept suspects and vehicles potentially fleeing after violent incidents.

This followed a bombing in Saiburi district targeting traffic police officers at a security checkpoint. The blast injured six officers and several civilians, prompting heightened security measures across the region.

Authorities instructed personnel to use armored vehicles for patrols and intensify security checks, especially in vulnerable areas. Officers have been directed to inspect their posts for potential threats and implement stricter safety protocols.

Drone surveillance is being employed in high-risk zones, and civilian networks along key routes, such as the Yala-Betong Highway, are assisting in monitoring for suspicious activity.

Later that evening, at 7:15 PM, two gunmen on a motorcycle reportedly fired at a security checkpoint in Khok Pho district while officers were preparing for emergency response drills inside an armored guard post.

No injuries were reported, but the attackers fired multiple rounds, hitting the post and nearby radio equipment, before fleeing the scene. Authorities recovered 25-30 spent 5.56mm casings and 7 casings from a 9mm weapon.

Due to the presence of civilians in the area, police refrained from returning fire. Officials have urged the public to report suspicious behavior and remain vigilant as security efforts are scaled up to prevent further violence.
