On January 5th, 2025, Mr. Somchai Morakotsriwan, the Director-General of the Department of Employment, revealed details about a recruitment scam targeting 250 Thai workers.
Victims alleged they were deceived into paying 60,000–120,000 baht each for promises of agricultural jobs in Australia.
The issue surfaced when approximately 40 victims and their relatives reported the scam at Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station. A broker, publicly identified only as “Fah,” had assured them of job placements and collected 30,000–60,000 baht per person as fees, claiming travel arrangements were made for January 4th on flight TG471. Upon arrival, the group discovered no tickets had been booked.
Thai authorities estimate at least 250 victims and have already identified suspects involved. The Director-General instructed the Central Employment Registrar to collaborate with the Anti-Trafficking Division and Suvarnabhumi Airport Police to gather evidence and assist victims.
Immigration officials and airlines have been directed to tighten checks on job seekers and monitor for suspicious activities linked to illegal recruitment brokers.
Victims, now planning to file official complaints with the Anti-Trafficking Division on January 6th, hope for swift justice.
The Director-General reiterated the importance of using legal channels for overseas employment to avoid similar scams.
