Drunk Australian Man Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Motorcycle and Fleeing From Police in Bangkok Following Dispute Over Rental Damages

Bangkok- An Australian man was arrested in Bangkok after allegedly stealing a rented motorcycle, speeding away from Thai police, and later trying to flee on foot, say arresting officers.

On January 3rd at 6:45 PM, Phra Khanong patrol officers arrested a suspect they publicly identified as Mr. Beau Gerand Hegarty, 41, an Australian national, who was charged with driving under the influence, theft, and operating a vehicle without a license.

The incident began when Mr. Hegarty allegedly took a red and white Honda CRF300L motorcycle from Samrong Nuea Police Station in Samut Prakan, where it had been impounded after he allegedly damaged it and refused to pay for repairs. Suan Lum radio center notified the arresting officers that the stolen motorcycle and rider were heading through Sukhumvit 62 intersection. The officers positioned themselves under the Bang Chak BTS station and pursued Mr. Hegarty when they spotted him.

Mr. Hegarty tried to escape by riding into a Peugeot showroom on Sukhumvit Road in the Phra Khanong District, and then attempted to flee on foot, but the officers successfully apprehended him.

Upon questioning the victim, it was confirmed that the motorcycle was indeed rented out to Mr. Hegarty, who had refused to pay for repairs, according to the daily record at Samrong Nuea Police Station.

Officers searched Mr. Hegarty and found no illegal items, but he appeared intoxicated and could not provide a driver’s license. He was charged with driving without a license and informed of his rights before being taken to Phra Khanong Police Station to measure his blood alcohol level. The test result showed 85 milligrams percent, which exceeds the legal limit of 35 milligrams percent. Consequently, he was also charged with driving under the influence.

Mr. Hegarty did not release a statement to the press explaining his alleged actions.
