Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed deep concern over the raging wildfires in Los Angeles and nearby areas late on January 9th, 2025.
She conveyed her support to the U.S. on social media, emphasizing the importance of protecting Thai residents in the affected areas, particularly in Los Angeles, which houses a significant Thai community.
Paetongtarn instructed the Thai Consulate General in Los Angeles to provide full support to Thai citizens. An emergency operations center has been established to offer assistance and ensure their safety.
She urged Thai residents to follow official updates closely and seek help from the Consulate if necessary. “I hope the situation improves soon. Please stay safe and informed,” she wrote.
The wildfires, spreading across several areas of Los Angeles, have prompted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to postpone the announcement of Oscar nominations from January 17th to January 19th.
Local authorities confirmed one of many wildfires in Hollywood Hills near Runyon Canyon, close to the iconic Hollywood sign. The blaze, covering approximately 10 acres, has led to evacuations in the area.
Some areas, like the Palisades, have had entire neighborhoods destroyed. Additionally, police have stated at least some of the fires appear to have possibly been started by arsonists on purpose.
