The following is our weekly feature in which we highlight the top local stories in our area of Phuket from the past week. The number of stories differs from week to week.

These are chosen and curated by our editorial team and are designed for our readers to get a quick “catch-up” of important stories they may have missed. We do national recaps in a separate article, this is only the top local stories in Phuket and nearby provinces.

They are in no particular order of importance but roughly in order of publishing. These are from Monday, January 6th to Sunday January 12th, 2024.

  1. Phuket has announced in total 74 road accidents with 71 injuries and four deaths in the Ten Dangerous Days New Year Road Campaign.

Accidents were mostly caused by excessive speeding (64%).

2. A Russian was allegedly robbed by a Russian suspect at a hotel in Karon.

Arrest warrants have been issued for two Russian suspects after a Russian victim was allegedly robbed and attacked by them at a hotel in Karon.

3. A Belarusian man on holiday in Thailand officially apologized on Monday (January 7th) after he injured some members of the Karon Police when he was intoxicated last month.

He also affirmed his love for Phuket Province and the joy he feels from its residents’ smiles. Mr. Asychuk confirmed that he plans to return to Phuket in the future but vowed not to repeat his actions.

4. A Kazakhstani businessman has approached the Phuket Governor for assistance after allegedly being defrauded by a Ukrainian agency in a 300 million baht property investment in Phuket.

The businessman, who owns a construction business, reported that a Ukrainian individual persuaded him to invest in a luxury apartment project near Layan Beach in Cherng Talay through an agency. 

5. Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra chaired a meeting with key agencies to address Phuket’s infrastructure challenges and elevate it as a premium tourism destination capable of hosting large-scale events.

Highlighting the province’s rebound, with nearly 25% of all tourists visiting Phuket, she emphasized increasing per capita spending and supporting local businesses.

6. A tragic incident occurred in Karon when a staffer fell from a parasail and died.

Witnesses stated that almost all staffers who go up on parasails with tourists usually do not wear any safety equipment themselves, although they ensure that tourists are equipped with safety gear.
