Thai PM Uses AI to Reassure Chinese Tourists on Safety Concerns

National —

On January 22nd, 2025, Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra released a 1:33-minute video via social media, addressing safety concerns among Chinese tourists.

Leveraging AI technology to translate her message from Thai to Chinese, Paetongtarn expressed her regret at not speaking Mandarin herself but stressed her commitment to fostering understanding and confidence among travelers.

In the video, she acknowledged fears stemming from reports of Chinese nationals being lured to Thailand by call center scams and concerns about human trafficking.

She emphasized that the Thai government is taking the issue seriously, ordering relevant agencies to enhance safety standards, crack down on transnational crime, and tighten measures against illegal border crossings.

A more integrated approach among agencies and improved support systems for tourists were also highlighted.

Paetongtarn assured that the safety of tourists is a top priority and invited Chinese travelers to visit Thailand during the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations, adding special significance to the occasion.

TPN Media notes that some critics online were negative about the video due to utilizing AI, pointing out that AI was often used by scammers to defraud others, including a recent attempt against the Thai Prime Minister herself, in which scammers from Myanmar pretended to be new US President Donald Trump. These critics believed that the PM should have filmed a real video and used a translator if possible for a more genuine and personable approach.
