Update: Former Thai Subdistrict Chief Avoids Death Penalty in Cop Killing Case, Sentenced to Life Instead

National —

On January 30th, 2025, the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road delivered its verdict in the high-profile murder case against 37-year-old Praween ‘Kamnan Nok’ Janklai.

He was found guilty of ordering the fatal shooting of Maj. Siwakorn Saibua, an inspector from the Highway Police Region 1, at a birthday party in Nakhon Pathom on September 6th, 2023. The attack also left another officer, Pol. Lt. Col. Wasin Panppee, seriously injured.

The court ruled that key witness testimonies, including Praveen’s alleged signal to the gunman before the shooting, were consistent and credible.

Initially sentenced to death, Praween’s punishment was reduced to life imprisonment after he compensated the victim’s family. He had reportedly denied all charges and fought the case in court.
