Lao, February 7th, 2025 – Laos reduced its electricity supply to Myanmar’s border town of Tachileik from 30 megawatts to 13 megawatts, forcing local authorities to ration power.
The town’s main power board will receive 5 MW, while 8 MW will be distributed to branch offices.
The Lao power company clarified that it supplies electricity to multiple neighboring countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar, under ASEAN energy agreements.
Laos had signed a contract in 2021 to supply up to 30 MW to Tachileik, but the town recently increased its usage to 27 MW after Thailand ceased supplying power.

Officials suspect that some electricity may have been diverted to illegal operations, including call center scams. The Lao power company is now working with Myanmar authorities to cut power to suspected criminal groups while minimizing the impact on ordinary residents.
Laos reiterated that it does not support or sell electricity to criminal enterprises, particularly scam networks.
