Thai Authorities Boost Border Patrols After Electricity Shutdown

KANCHANABURI, February 5th, 2025 – The National Security Council (NSC) ordered the shutdown of electricity, internet, and fuel supply to five locations in Myanmar, starting February 5th, in an effort to disrupt call center scam operations.

One affected site is near the Three Pagodas Pass in Kanchanaburi’s Sangkhla Buri district, bordering Myanmar’s Payathonzu.

At 9:00 AM on February 5th, local authorities, security forces, and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) carried out the power cut in compliance with government orders. Officials have also tightened security measures, increasing patrols and monitoring for illegal fuel smuggling.

Residents in Payathonzu anticipated the shutdown, securing solar panels in advance to mitigate disruptions. Meanwhile, Thai businesses expect minimal impact on trade if Myanmar authorities communicate the necessity of these measures to their people.
