Thailand, February 12th, 2025 – Myanmar authorities handed over 260 foreign nationals, believed to be victims of human trafficking and online scam operations in Myawaddy, to Thai officials at Tak’s Phop Phra district.
The group, comprising citizens from 20 countries, was received by the Thai military, police, and social welfare agencies at border checkpoint No. 28.
Among the victims were 138 Ethiopians, 23 Kenyans, 16 Filipinos, 15 Malaysians, 10 Chinese, and several others from South Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Thai officials will now coordinate with embassies for their return home.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai stated that this is part of an ongoing effort, with around 7,000 more victims still awaiting release in Myanmar. He confirmed that diplomatic channels are ensuring direct repatriation to destination countries without prolonged stays in Thailand.
Meanwhile, Thai authorities, in coordination with Myanmar forces, have successfully arrested key members of a scam gang linked to the trafficking of Chinese actors into forced labor.
The crackdown, reinforced by Thailand’s strict border control measures, has received international recognition, with China expressing appreciation for the collaborative efforts.
