Bangkok Authorities Detain Foreign Beggars Exploiting Children

At 10:00 PM on February 14th, 2025, police from Lumpini Station and related agencies conducted a crackdown on beggars along Sukhumvit Road, from Soi 3 to Asoke intersection in Bangkok’s Watthana district.

Bangkok authorities detained 13 beggars: one Thai, 10 Cambodians, and two Laotians. All were taken to the Lumpini Police Station for screening and charged under Section 13 of the 2016 Beggar Control Act.

Foreign nationals were charged for begging and staying in Thailand without permission, before being handed over to the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security for further processing, including DNA checks at a shelter in Nonthaburi.

Social workers also placed the children under protective care at the Bangkok Child and Family Home while seeking their parents or guardians, whose details will be provided to police for legal action.
