Mae Hong Son, February 26th, 2025 — Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed concerns over the Israeli presence in Pai, following discussions with the Israeli ambassador and relevant agencies.
He confirmed that the situation remains normal, with rising tourist numbers boosting the local economy.
Anutin dismissed rumors of an Israeli settlement, stating that only about 20 Israeli-Thai families reside in Pai full time, living peacefully, with the rest being short term tourists on legal tourist visas. While cultural differences exist, the Israeli embassy pledged to enhance understanding, including appropriate dress codes. He assured that there is no espionage or security-related network.
Regarding the Chabad House, Anutin confirmed it is legally registered as a foundation, serving as a religious site for Jewish visitors, similar to mosques or Buddhist temples. He emphasized that it does not operate as a business and does not discriminate against others or hold secret parties, stockpile weapons, or other false rumors online.
Officials also addressed concerns about inappropriate behavior by some tourists, including unpaid meals and sticker placements in public areas, with the Israeli embassy promising cooperation.
To preserve Pai’s peaceful identity, Anutin ordered stricter enforcement against public cannabis and alcohol consumption, as well as littering during rafting activities. Authorities have also banned smoking and cannabis use in Pai’s walking street, aligning with existing laws.
This entire situation stems from a deportation incident of several Israeli nationals who caused a ruckus at a public hospital earlier this month, as we reported in depth here at TPN Media.
Since that incident, misinformation has flowed heavily online according to Thai officials, with the Prime Minister herself releasing a statement denying the rumors on social media.
The Israeli Embassy also released a rare statement asking its citizens and tourists to follow Thai laws and respect Thai culture while visiting Thailand.
Since that statement, Israeli tourists and expats have released multiple statements reinforcing their love for Thailand and respect for Thailand’s sovereignty, hoping to help cool tensions online.
