National —
Thailand will start collecting a 300-baht tourism fee from foreign visitors in 2025, with implementation expected by the peak travel season, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Mr. Sorawong Thienthong.
The fee aims to alleviate the financial burden on the Thai government, which currently provides assistance to tourists in cases of accidents or safety incidents. A portion of the collected funds will also be allocated to a mandatory travel insurance scheme for visitors, the minister said. However, the specifics of this plan are still vague.
Additionally, Mr. Sorawong revealed that the revenue will support tourism development efforts in several provinces. He confirmed that the fee collection will begin in 2025. Authorities are in the process of finalizing the official announcement, which is expected to be issued by March 2025.
Once enacted, the implementation is projected to take approximately five to six months, with collection likely to commence by late 2025, which coincides with Thailand’s high tourist season.
Initially, all foreign visitors will be required to pay a 300-baht fee per entry, regardless of whether they arrive by air, land, or sea.
TPN media notes that this fee has been debated for years and despite these statements this weekend this is by no means a certainty that it will happen.
