Thai Government Considers Thailand-Cambodia Border Wall to Curb Illegal Crossings, Online Scams

Thailand, March 3rd, 2025 — Jirayu Huangsap, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced key decisions from the latest Cabinet meeting addressing crime at the Thai-Cambodian border, including crackdowns on call center scams and a proposed border wall.

Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra reported on her visit to Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo, where authorities have disrupted scam operations by cutting internet and phone signals, lowering transmission tower heights, and reducing signal strength.

While the measures have been effective, she urged agencies to minimize disruptions to local residents.

The Cabinet also directed agencies to study the feasibility of a border wall to prevent illegal crossings and scam operations. The Foreign and Defense Ministries will coordinate with Cambodian authorities to seek a joint resolution.

Additionally, the Customs Department was tasked with assessing the need for X-ray tunnels at border checkpoints to enhance cargo inspections. The Interior Ministry and security agencies will also evaluate expanding CCTV coverage along the border for improved surveillance.

This follows ongoing crackdowns on illegal scam centers in Myanmar as well, as we have reported extensively here.

In February, over two hundred people allegedly forced to work in scam centers in Cambodia were rescued.
