Human Trafficking Victims Seek Justice After Allegedly Being Trapped by Chinese Scammer Gangs in Cambodia

Thailand, March 17th, 2025 — Jaruwat Jinmakka, Vice President of the Immanuel Foundation, accompanied human trafficking victims of Chinese scammer gangs in Cambodia to submit a petition seeking justice.

The victims were allegedly tricked by Chinese scammer gangs in Cambodia, initially promised legitimate jobs such as security and housekeeping, but later imprisoned, tortured, and had their phones confiscated.

Some were severely beaten. Over 3,000 Thais are believed to be trapped in similar situations, with 114 victims confirmed in Poipet alone, the youngest being 14 and the oldest 73, according to the source.

Jaruwat called for urgent action, highlighting that some victims face criminal charges, frozen bank accounts, and arrest warrants, while the real traffickers remain free. He urged the Thai government to strengthen cooperation with Cambodian authorities and use regional frameworks to combat transnational crime.

Thai police were urged to improve efforts to track down traffickers and address mule account networks.

Phongsanarit Phasineenon, from the Thai Citizens Assistance Center Abroad, reported that the most recent rescued victim, a 21-year-old, had been severely beaten and unable to walk upon rescue.

Victims described being forced into drug use, sexually assaulted, and tortured when they failed to meet scam targets. Daily calls for help from victims in Cambodia number at least five to six cases, according to Phongsanarit.
