Myanmar Pardons and Releases Four Thai Fishermen After Diplomatic Efforts

Thailand, at 2:20 PM on March 29th, 2025 — A Thai delegation arrived by speedboat at Bureingnong Port in Kawthaung, Myanmar, to receive four Thai fishermen who were pardoned and released by Myanmar junta authorities. The fishermen appeared in good spirits upon meeting the Thai team.

Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Ras Chaleechan thanked the Myanmar military junta for pardoning the fishermen and ensuring their swift release, highlighting the positive diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He also expressed condolences over the recent major earthquake in Myanmar and confirmed that Thailand is coordinating with international partners to provide aid.

The fishermen — Sunan, 68 (captain); Sompong, 61 (engineer); Thaworn, 64 (engineer); and Wiroj, 69 (crew member) — were arrested after a Myanmar navy vessel fired on their fishing boat on November 30th, 2024. After a health check in Ranong, they reunited with their families.
