Thailand Prepares to Launch Cell Broadcast Alerts for Public Safety After Major Earthquakes

Thailand, at 11:00 AM on April 5th, 2025 — Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), held an urgent meeting with Thailand’s three major mobile network providers to fine-tune the process of sending public disaster alerts via SMS and Cell Broadcast systems.

Phasakorn said the meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between DDPM and mobile carriers to ensure efficient and timely delivery of alerts.
While full deployment of the Cell Broadcast system is still underway, the agencies have now agreed on clear protocols for using SMS and Virtual Cell Broadcast for alerts, particularly in cases of earthquakes and other major disasters.

The DDPM is actively working to improve the nationwide alert system to ensure all citizens receive accurate and timely information. Emergency communication plans are in place to align operations across all relevant agencies, following a newly developed standard operating procedure (SOP).

To build public confidence, the DDPM will soon conduct a test of the Cell Broadcast system with National Telecom (NT). A new task force has also been formed to expand disaster response SOPs to cover all seven major disaster types in Thailand.
