On the evening of April 14, 2025, in Sanam Chai Khet district in Chachoengsao province a man in his 30s, allegedly intoxicated, drove a white pickup truck at high speed into a crowd of festival-goers in Ban Khlong Udom around 7:20 PM. The crash injured at least 12 people, with six sustaining serious injuries and six others with minor injuries. Ten of the injured were hospitalized, while two declined medical treatment.
The Songkran festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year, is marked by water fights and communal celebrations, drawing large crowds to the streets. The driver’s reckless act caused panic, with one person reportedly trapped under the vehicle. Locals quickly intervened, lifting the truck to free the victim and assisting the wounded while awaiting emergency services. The Phanom Rescue Association dispatched vehicles and volunteers to the scene.
In the aftermath, an enraged crowd of many people attacked the driver, smashing the truck’s windows and dragging him from the vehicle. He was reportedly severely beaten until police intervened, rescuing him and taking him into custody. Authorities are investigating whether the act was intentional or a result of drunk driving, with charges filed for driving under the influence. The driver’s motives remain unclear, though witnesses suggested he deliberately accelerated into the crowd.
Initial reports suggest the suspect tested positive in alcohol tests taken shortly after the accident, said local police.
