Bangkok, April 23rd, 2025 — Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesperson Ekwaranyu Amrapal announced that Bangkok’s new Animal Control Ordinance 2024, published in the Royal Gazette on January 15th, 2025, will take effect on January 10th, 2026.
The ordinance prioritizes safety for both humans and animals and sets clear rules on animal ownership. Pet owners are urged to review the ordinance carefully, as non-compliance could result in legal penalties. Key points include pet limits based on space:
- Large mammals (e.g., cows, buffaloes, horses, deer): 1 per 200 sq.m.
- Small mammals (e.g., goats, pigs, ponies): 3 per 200 sq.m.
- Birds: 1 chicken/duck/goose per 4 sq.m., 1 large bird (e.g., ostrich) per 50 sq.m., 5 small birds per 1 sq.m.
Animals are not allowed in public spaces except for medical treatment, official activities, relocation, or traditional/religious purposes.
Dog and cat owners must register their pets within 120 days of birth or 30 days of acquiring the animal. Limits include:
- Condos (20–80 sq.m.): 1 pet
- Condos (80+ sq.m.): Up to 2 pets
- Land (≤20 sq.wah): 2 pets
- Land (≤50 sq.wah): 3 pets
- Land (≤100 sq.wah): 4 pets
- Land (100+ sq.wah): Up to 6 pets
Dogs and cats must be leashed or contained when outdoors. Owners must clean up waste in public areas.
Special control is required for allegedly aggressive breeds like pit bulls and rottweilers. These dogs must wear muzzles and be leashed with a secure grip no more than 50 cm from the collar at all times.
