PRESS RELEASE:
The first trial of the cell broadcasting alert system showed promising results, with alerts transmitted in under one minute.
Thailand conducted its initial test of the Cell Broadcast System (CBS) in five locations, simulating flash floods and rapid water flow emergencies. The alert messages were successfully transmitted within one minute through all three major mobile networks, across both Android and iOS platforms. The test was deemed satisfactory overall.
Phasakorn Boonyalak, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, stated that the signals were sent for 10 minutes. However, minor signal overflow was detected within a 1.5-kilometer radius beyond the test site due to incomplete regional network coverage. This issue will be addressed in future adjustments.
To receive CBS alerts, Android users must update to version 11, currently used by 70 million subscribers, and iOS users to version 18, covering 50 million users. Those still on 2G or 3G networks, approximately 3 million numbers, will receive alerts via SMS within 10 minutes. Both CBS and SMS systems will operate simultaneously to ensure broad and timely public notification.
The next CBS test is scheduled for May 7 at 1 p.m., covering district-level areas in Mueang Lampang, Mueang Khon Kaen, Mueang Nakhon Sawan, Mueang Surat Thani, and Din Daeng District in Bangkok. A province-wide test will follow on May 13 at 1 p.m. in Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Bangkok. Alerts will be sent in both Thai and English.
