Thailand Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Monsoon Season Nears

Thailand-

On May 5th, 2025, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rainfall across parts of Thailand, signaling the transition toward the rainy season expected to begin in mid-May. The forecast, covering the next 24 hours, highlights weather changes driven by southerly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the Andaman Sea, coupled with an easterly wave affecting the Gulf of Thailand and southern regions.

According to the TMD, scattered thundershowers are expected, with heavy rain likely in the southern provinces, particularly along the east coast from Chumphon southward.

Rainfall accumulation could reach 35.1 to 90 mm in some areas, raising concerns about flash floods and overflows, especially in low-lying regions and near waterways. The TMD advises residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and prepare for potential evacuation. In the Gulf of Thailand, waves may reach 1-2 meters, with heights exceeding 2 meters during thundershowers, prompting warnings for ships to avoid stormy areas.

Northern and northeastern regions may see less intense rainfall, with totals projected to be 10% below normal, while central and eastern areas align with typical seasonal averages.

The TMD also notes that the pre-southwest monsoon phase is causing unstable weather, with hot and humid conditions fueling thunderstorms, particularly in the upper northern and northeastern regions.

As Thailand approaches the official start of the rainy season, the TMD urges the public to monitor weather updates closely and take precautions against severe storms and flooding. With the potential for impacts, residents are encouraged to secure structures, avoid open areas during lightning, and stay informed to ensure safety during this weather period.
