Suspected Explosive Devices Uncovered at Phromthep Cape in Rawai

Phuket –

Authorities in Phuket have successfully located and neutralized three of four suspected explosive devices, following the arrest of two individuals from Pattani province earlier this week. The investigation has heightened security measures across key tourist destinations on the island.

On the morning of June 26, a suspicious object concealed in a Ko-Kae peanut can was discovered wedged between concrete seating near the iconic Phromthep Cape viewpoint—a popular site for sunset watchers. Inside the can was a timer device set for 118 hours. The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit immediately intervened and safely destroyed the item on-site.

These operations are part of a broader security response prompted by intelligence gained during the arrest of the two suspects at a Phang Nga police checkpoint. Authorities believe a total of four devices were planted on the island. With three now recovered, a search continues for the fourth.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, head of Phuket’s Provincial Police, was present during the Patong Beach operation and praised the swift coordination among units. The forensic division is now analyzing the dismantled components to determine the nature and origin of the devices.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious items or behavior. Enhanced patrols and monitoring are ongoing in high-traffic areas.
