BANGKOK, June 30, 2025 — Fifteen pro-democracy organizations in Thailand have called for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign following a leaked private conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, which they claim has severely damaged her political legitimacy and eroded public trust.
In a joint statement issued today, the groups urged Paetongtarn to step down immediately to allow a democratic process to select new leadership. They also demanded the rejection of any extra-constitutional interventions, including military coups, warning that such actions would cause political instability and deepen governance failures.
The organizations further called for urgent amendments to Thailand’s 2017 constitution, drafted under the previous military junta, which they described as flawed and undemocratic. They advocated for the creation of a new, people-centered charter to pave the way for comprehensive democratic reforms.
“The leaked conversation has undermined the prime minister’s credibility and exposed the fragility of Thailand’s democratic institutions,” the statement read. “We demand accountability and a renewed commitment to democratic principles through constitutional reform.”
The controversy surrounding the leaked discussion has intensified public scrutiny of Paetongtarn’s leadership, with critics accusing her administration of failing to uphold democratic values. The pro-democracy groups added that only a transparent and inclusive process can restore public confidence and ensure political stability.
The Thai government has yet to respond officially to the statement, but the demands signal growing tensions between pro-democracy advocates and the current administration. Observers warn that the situation could further polarize Thailand’s already fractious political landscape.
