WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 28th, 2025– In a surprising diplomatic gesture that has sparked global intrigue, U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly written a personal letter to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, expressing gratitude for Manet’s formal nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The development comes on the heels of a formal letter from Manet dated August 7th, 2025, addressed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In it, the Cambodian leader praised Trump’s “timely intervention” as instrumental in averting a “potentially devastating conflict” along the shared border with Thailand. “His initiative and support contributed greatly to an immediate ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai forces and his continuous attention on its successful implementation until peace is fully achieved,” Manet wrote, adding that the nomination reflects the “wishes of the Cambodian people both inside and outside of Cambodia.” The letter, which has since gone viral on social media platforms like X shows a rare instance of Southeast Asian leadership endorsing a U.S. president for the prestigious award.
As the Nobel Committee deliberates for the 2026 prize (awarded in October), all eyes will be on whether this nomination gains traction. For now, the exchange of letters between Washington and Phnom Penh serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of international diplomacy under Trump.
