Phuket Authorities Tighten Hotel Security After Viral Keycard Incident

Phuket—

Provincial officials have launched a high-profile inspection at a leading resort at Surin Beach following a viral video showing a man using a master keycard to unlawfully access a guest’s room. The incident has sparked widespread concern over tourist safety in one of Thailand’s most popular destinations.

Police in Cherng Talay have arrested the head of security at a hotel after he allegedly used a master key card to attempt entry into a guest’s room late at night. The incident has raised serious concerns about hotel security protocols and guest safety.

Senior officials led by Rungreung Thimabut, Phuket’s Deputy Governor, visited the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Surin Beach to investigate the case. The inspection was ordered by Governor Nirun Pongsitthithorn to verify compliance with hotel regulations and assess security measures.

Authorities revealed that the resort is currently in the process of renewing its hotel license, which expired at the end of December 2025. The property, officially registered as a Type 3 hotel with 256 rooms, is located in Cherngtalay, Thalang.

Officials stressed that under Thailand’s Hotel Act, operators must maintain guest records, report visitor data to registrars, and ensure that no unauthorized individuals hide or loiter on the premises. Any failure to uphold these responsibilities could jeopardize the hotel’s license renewal.

Deputy Governor Rungreung noted that the investigation is not only about enforcing hotel law but also about safeguarding Phuket’s reputation as a global tourism hub. “Safety of tourists and residents must come first,” he said, adding that the province will act decisively if negligence is found.

Officials reiterated that the case will be handled with impartiality, regardless of whether victims are celebrities or ordinary visitors. The provincial administration vowed to pursue the matter to its conclusion to protect Phuket’s image and maintain international confidence in the island’s hospitality sector.
