Thai Man Arrested After Illegally Entering Famous Pygmy Hippo Moo Deng’s Enclosure at Khao Kheow Open Zoo Near Pattaya

A shocking incident occurred yesterday, March 17th, at approximately 5:17 p.m. at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province, when an individual jumped into the enclosure of the famous pygmy hippopotamus “Moo Deng” (หมูเด้ง).

Zoo security personnel quickly intervened to control the situation and took the person into custody. Police from the relevant jurisdiction were notified and have since assumed responsibility for further legal proceedings.

The zoo’s official page, “ขาหมู แอนด์เดอะแก๊ง” (Khah Moo & The Gang), which is closely associated with Moo Deng’s care and updates, released a detailed statement expressing alarm over the unexpected event. Fortunately, the individual sustained no injuries from the animals involved and both Moo Deng and her mother Jona are fine, although appeared notably annoyed at the intrusion. The person has now been handed over to police authorities for appropriate action.

The zoo made it clear that entering the restricted hippopotamus enclosure is strictly prohibited for the general public. Even zoo keepers performing routine cleaning or maintenance duties must adhere to rigorous safety protocols. Pygmy hippos, despite their cute appearance, are inherently dangerous animals with unpredictable and aggressive behavior. Access is permitted only to authorized personnel under controlled conditions.

Zoo officials confirmed that Moo Deng remains safe and unharmed, with no physical contact or interaction from the intruder. Veterinary staff are monitoring the animal and her family for any signs of stress following the disturbance.

The incident has drawn widespread attention online, with many condemning the reckless act amid Moo Deng’s massive global popularity as a viral sensation. Authorities are expected to pursue charges related to trespassing and endangerment, showing the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and visitor safety rules.
