Provincial leaders, security agencies, and foreign representatives gathered today at the Sarasin Conference Room, Phuket Provincial Hall, to discuss strategies for managing and regulating the behavior of international tourists in the province. The meeting was chaired by Governor Nirun Pongsitthithavorn, with senior officials from the military, police, immigration, tourism, and local administration in attendance, alongside representatives of foreign communities.
Phuket remains one of the world’s premier destinations. In 2025, the province welcomed over 14.12 million visitors, generating more than 545 billion baht in revenue. During the first quarter of 2026 alone, arrivals reached 3.81 million, with hotel occupancy averaging 83.39%. Governor Nirun stated that while Phuket warmly welcomes tourists, the island’s population of roughly 400,000 must coexist harmoniously with millions of visitors each year. He stressed that all individuals, Thai or foreign, are subject to the same laws and regulations.
Officials highlighted recurring issues involving some tourists, including:
- Traffic law violations
- Unauthorized employment
- Overstaying visas
- Public disturbances
- Activities damaging Phuket’s image, particularly in Patong
Security agencies spoke to two main directives:
- Strict enforcement of laws, applying maximum penalties to deter misconduct.
- Clear communication of rules and prohibitions to ensure tourists of all nationalities understand local expectations.
Authorities confirmed that serious offenses by foreign nationals could lead to immigration reviews and possible revocation of residency rights. Cases such as driving without a valid license will be prosecuted and referred to the courts. The governor reiterated Phuket’s commitment to being a gracious host but urged foreign representatives to help communicate the importance of respecting Thai laws, local culture, and the rights of others.
The meeting concluded with a unified call for cooperation between government agencies and foreign communities. By balancing hospitality with firm law enforcement, Phuket wants to safeguard its reputation as a world-class destination where residents and visitors can coexist peacefully and equitably.
