A sudden summer storm with strong gusts struck a popular Wan Lai Songkran festival on April 30th, 2026, causing a large entrance arch to collapse onto concert-goers, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
The incident occurred around early evening at the Pong Siri Market in the Khok Sawang Subdistrict. The Wan Lai event, a traditional water festival in the region often held after the national Songkran period in late April, featured concerts by 6-7 well-known Thai artists. Crowds, particularly teenagers and young people, had gathered since around 4 p.m. to secure spots near the entrance.
According to local media reports, a sudden strong wind from the storm (described as a summer or pre-monsoon storm with thunderstorms) hit the area, overwhelming the structure of the oversized entrance sign or arch. It collapsed onto nearby stalls and people waiting to enter, creating chaos.
Rescue workers and police from Saraburi Mueang Police Station responded quickly. Officials reported one fatality: a 17-year-old boy. Eleven others were injured, six females and five males, with at least one in serious condition. All injured were rushed to Saraburi Hospital for emergency treatment. Injuries included head trauma, fractures, bruises, and in some cases, scalding from nearby food stalls.
This tragedy shows the risks of temporary structures at outdoor festivals during Thailand’s stormy transition periods, especially with large crowds. No immediate details were available on the structural integrity inspection of the arch or long-term event plans. Authorities continued to assist victims and investigate the cause as of May 1st.
