Sa Kaeo – Thai authorities have secured court approval to detain eight Chinese nationals suspected of being senior members of a major scam network operating out of Poipet, Cambodia, after the group was caught attempting to enter Thailand illegally.
The suspects, seven men and one woman, were arrested along with a Myanmar national on May 1st while traveling on Highway 318 in Wang Nam Yen district. They were riding in a red pickup truck bearing Chanthaburi license plates, driven by a Thai man who reportedly admitted he had been hired to transport the group to Bangkok.
Police believe the Chinese nationals were fleeing a recent crackdown on scam operations by Cambodian authorities in Poipet, a border town notorious for call-center and cyber fraud syndicates targeting victims across Asia and beyond.
On May 3rd, investigators from Wang Nam Yen Police Station presented the nine foreign suspects before the Sa Kaeo Provincial Court, requesting pre-trial detention. Three additional Thai suspects were also brought before the court in connection with the case.
All eight Chinese nationals have been formally charged with illegal entry into the Kingdom. Authorities are now expanding their investigation to determine the full extent of the group’s alleged involvement in scam or call-center activities. Some of the suspects are reportedly preparing to apply for bail while the probe continues.
The arrests show ongoing cross-border efforts to dismantle transnational fraud networks that frequently use the Cambodia-Thailand border as a base of operations. Thai police say they are coordinating with Cambodian counterparts and plan to share intelligence on the broader network.
