Thailand’s Booming Pet Industry Takes Center Stage at Massive Pet Expo, Showing Huge Growth of This Industry

Bangkok

As Pet Expo Thailand 2026 takes place at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center this weeked, drawing thousands of pet lovers with hundreds of booths showcasing everything from premium foods to innovative accessories, the event serves as a vivid snapshot of a pet industry that has exploded into a multi-billion-baht powerhouse in the kingdom.

Thailand now boasts Southeast Asia’s largest pet care market, valued at around $1.5 billion in 2023 and continuing rapid growth. The pet food segment alone is projected to reach approximately $2.46 billion in 2026, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of over 9% through 2031. Overall industry estimates exceed 250 billion baht (roughly $7.5 billion), fueled by annual growth rates of 5-10% in recent years.

Behind the numbers lies a cultural shift: Pets are increasingly viewed as family members rather than animals. Kasetsart University surveys show Thailand’s pet population surpassing 5 million in recent counts, dominated by dogs (around 3.45 million) and cats (nearly 2 million), with steady rises especially among urban millennials and younger generations willing to splurge on high-quality care.

This “humanization” trend has supercharged businesses across the board. Pet services, from veterinary clinics and grooming to boarding and wellness, generated nearly $360 million in 2024 and are forecast to hit over $850 million by 2033. Thailand has also emerged as a global export leader in pet food, shipping hundreds of millions of kilograms annually.

Social media has amplified the boom, creating a thriving ecosystem of pet influencers whose furry stars command massive followings and lucrative brand deals. Accounts featuring adorable dogs and cats regularly partner with food brands, accessories, and even non-pet products, turning pet content into serious revenue streams for owners and businesses alike.

From specialized veterinary diets and eco-friendly products to luxury grooming services, the industry’s growth shows no signs of slowing. As one industry leader noted during the expo buildup, Thailand’s pet economy reflects deeper societal changes, where four-legged companions are not just pets, but central figures in modern Thai households.

The ongoing Pet Expo, running through May 3rd with over 800 booths and 300 exhibitors, perfectly encapsulates this fast-expanding sector.
