Chonburi Police Do Not Rule Out Terrorism in Case of Chinese National’s Massive Weapons Cache Near Pattaya

Pattaya/Chonburi, Thailand

Thai police in Chonburi province have explicitly not ruled out terrorism or sabotage as motives in the case of a 31-year-old Chinese national arrested after a car crash led authorities to uncover a large cache of military-grade weapons and explosives at his rented home near Pattaya.

The discovery began on May 8th, 2026, when police responded to a single-vehicle accident involving a sedan that flipped over in the Na Jomtien area of Banglamung district. Inside the car, officers found a pistol and ammunition. The driver, identified as Sun Mingchen and a 33-year-old Taiwanese woman accompanying him were detained.

A later raid on Sun’s residence in the Maple Village area of Huay Yai subdistrict uncovered what authorities described as a small but significant private arsenal. Seized items included:

– Two M16 assault rifles
– Several kilograms of C4 military-grade explosive
– Grenades
– Anti-personnel mines (including Russian models)
– Handguns, including one reportedly linked to a Thai police officer
– Hundreds of rounds of ammunition
– Other components, signal jammers, and gasoline

Police also reportedly found digital evidence, such as AI chatbot queries about explosive properties and videos of the suspect handling weapons.

Chonburi Provincial Police Commander Pol. Maj. Gen. Phongphan Wongmaneethes recently led a high-level meeting with investigators, stating that no angles are being dismissed, including possible preparation for terrorism, sabotage, or connections to criminal networks that could threaten national security. Senior officers, including National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet, have personally overseen the probe.

Sun has claimed he purchased the weapons online due to a personal interest in firearms and was suffering from depression, intending to use them for self-harm rather than any attack. Authorities have described his background as complex, noting multiple passports (Chinese, Dominica, and Cambodian as well as Thai registration and IDs) and frequent cross-border travel, including possible links to Cambodia. Neighbors described him as friendly and unremarkable.

The investigation has expanded rapidly. Police are tracing financial transactions, phone records, and supply networks. Several Thai suspects have already been questioned or arrested in connection with supplying weapons, including individuals linked to gun shops, a former or serving navy personnel, and at least one person whose bank account allegedly received transfers from Sun.

A police spokesman confirmed the case is being examined from all dimensions, including potential transnational crime links, while stressing that the suspect’s mental health claims do not exempt him from full legal accountability. Sun and the Taiwanese woman face multiple serious charges related to illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosives. He has been remanded in custody.

Although some previous statements of the suspect merely being a collector have been stated on Thai media or that the Taiwanese woman was just a tour guide, police made it clear these statements weren’t set in stone and were just thoughts or speculation. They also firmly denied any online rumors of “protection of the suspect” due to his wealth or special treatment and so has the Chinese Embassy.
