Phuket, Thailand – The Indian Embassy in Thailand has confirmed it is in direct contact with Thai authorities and is closely following the investigation into a mysterious incident in which four Indian tourists suddenly lost consciousness at a popular café in Phuket’s Kamala Beach area early on May 9th 2026. One of the men, 26-year-old Kushagra Agarwal, later died in a local hospital.
According to reports the group of five Indian men arrived at the café around 11 pm on May 8th. At approximately 1:54 am on May 9th, four of them began losing consciousness one after another for no immediately apparent reason. Café staff called emergency services, and rescue workers from the Kamala local administration transported three men to Patong Hospital and one to Thalang Hospital. All four were unconscious and unable to provide statements when police arrived.
The fifth member of the group showed no symptoms and told investigators he had no idea what had happened to his companions. Two of the unconscious men were later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital after developing coma-like symptoms. Kushagra Agarwal was pronounced dead there around 2:30 pm on May 9th. The remaining three patients are now reported to be in stable condition.
Kamala Police Station, led by investigators including Pol Lt. Wichayut Damphueak, has launched a full inquiry. Thai authorities have notified the Indian Embassy and are working with forensic pathologists to conduct a detailed autopsy on the deceased to establish the exact cause of death. As of 11-12 May, police have described the incident as mysterious, with no definitive cause yet publicly confirmed. Forensic examinations and hospital tests are ongoing.
In an official statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the government said:
“The Embassy has been in touch with the Thai authorities and closely monitoring the incident in which four Indian tourists fell unconscious in Phuket on May 9th, 2026 and were subsequently hospitalized for treatment.
Our deepest condolences for the death of one young Indian tourist among them. The Embassy officials are in contact with the family of the deceased to extend all support in this hour of grief.
We remain in contact with the relevant Thai authorities who are looking into the incident, and also following the health situation of the others.”
The MEA added that embassy officials continue to liaise with Thai authorities on both the investigation and the medical care of the surviving tourists.
The case has drawn attention in Phuket, a major tourist destination, as authorities seek to determine whether the collapses were linked to food, drink, environmental factors, or another cause. No criminal elements have been publicly indicated at this stage, and the probe remains focused on establishing the medical facts through autopsy and laboratory results.
Updates from Thai media indicate the investigation is active, with police continuing to interview café staff and review security footage while awaiting final forensic findings. The Indian Embassy has reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected families and ensuring full cooperation with Thai officials.
