Laos Cave Rescue Breakthrough as One Villager Freed After Over a Week Trapped in Flooded Cavern, Operation Continues Involving Thai Rescue Teams

Xaisomboun Province, Laos– In a solid development late Friday night, May 29th, 2026, rescue teams successfully extracted one of seven Lao villagers trapped inside a semi-submerged cave in central Laos for more than 10 days. The breakthrough came after an arduous multinational effort involving Thai cave rescue veterans, as heavy monsoon rains continue to complicate operations in the remote, flood-prone area.

The rescued man, identified in some reports as Muen, was guided out of the cave around 8:37 p.m. local time, appearing bedraggled and muddy but alive. Thai rescue group Metta Tham Rescue Kalasin shared images and confirmation on social media: “The first victim has been successfully rescued out of the cave.” One rescuer described the conditions as extremely challenging, likening narrow passages to “crawling through a drinking straw.”

The seven men, local villagers from areas in Xaisomboun province, entered the cave around May 19-20 seeking gold deposits, a common informal mining activity in the rugged, mountainous region roughly 120 km (75 miles) north of Vientiane. Heavy rains triggered flash flooding and a landslide, blocking the entrance with gravel, dirt, and debris, trapping them approximately 300 meters (984 feet) inside.

Initial fears mounted as days passed with no contact. Rescue efforts ramped up with Lao authorities, local volunteers, and Thai teams, including experienced divers from the renowned Tham Luang Nang Non cave rescue in Thailand. On May 27th, divers located five of the men alive, huddled on a rock in a dark, muddy chamber. They were exhausted and hungry but initially reported in stable condition with no serious injuries. Searches for the remaining two continued.

Thai rescuer Kengkard Bongkawong, a key figure in the operation and a veteran of the 2018 Thai cave rescue of a youth soccer team, noted the need for additional oxygen tanks and even an on-site refilling station. Divers faced zero visibility, narrow flooded corridors, poor air quality, and rising water levels make the situation more difficult.

The cave system is in a remote, hard-to-access mountainous area accessible only via muddy roads affected by the rainy season. Pumping operations to drain floodwaters have been underway, but overnight rains have hindered progress. The five located men required basic diving instruction or guided assistance for extraction, as full scuba evacuation through the tight passages poses significant risks.

As of Friday evening, four of the five located villagers remain inside, along with the ongoing search for the two missing individuals. The rescued man’s safe emergence marks a critical proof-of-concept for the extraction phase, boosting morale among the more than 100 rescuers involved.

Rescue teams plan to resume operations after a brief rest period, with additional specialist divers en route. Authorities are prioritizing the safe extraction of the remaining four known survivors while intensifying the search for the two unaccounted-for men. Lao meteorology officials have forecast continued rain, which could raise water levels and narrow the window for success.

Officials from both Laos and Thailand have focused on safety protocols, drawing lessons from the 2018 Thai rescue. Further updates on medical conditions, additional extractions, or findings related to the missing pair are anticipated in the coming hours and days. Families of the trapped men have expressed gratitude to the multinational teams, with one father publicly thanking rescuers.
