At Least 55 People Killed, Over 70 Injured in Massive Explosion at TNLA Explosives Depot in Northern Shan State, Myanmar

Myanmar-

A powerful explosion ripped through an economic center and explosives storage facility belonging to the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in Kong Tab village, Namkham district, northern Shan State, on May 31st, causing heavy casualties and widespread destruction.

The blast, which occurred around midday, killed at least 55 people and injured more than 70 others, according to initial reports. Some sources indicate the number of injured could be in the hundreds. Rescue workers continue to search for missing individuals beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings, raising fears that the death toll may rise further. Due to the remote location and ongoing civil war in Myanmar, exact numbers of deceased and injured are unable to be corroborated.

The explosion caused extensive damage across the surrounding residential area, with many homes destroyed or severely damaged by fire. Local hospitals, particularly in Namkham district, have issued urgent appeals for blood donations and medical supplies to treat the large number of casualties.

According to a preliminary statement from the TNLA, the blast originated from an internal explosion at a warehouse storing explosives used in mining operations under its affiliated economic entities. The facility reportedly held large quantities of explosives for mining, gas cylinders, and various hazardous materials.

The TNLA expressed condolences to the families of the victims and those affected, pledging to provide immediate assistance to survivors. The group also vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion and take legal action against any parties found responsible.

The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in northern Shan State, where various ethnic armed organizations, including the TNLA, are active. Further details on the exact cause of the blast are expected as the investigation proceeds.
