A concrete slab from the second floor of an aging building collapsed in the Talat Noi area of Bangkok’s Samphanthawong District on Saturday afternoon, killing one man unfortunately walking beneath it on the spot.
Emergency services received reports via the 199 hotline and LINE app at approximately 4:52 p.m. of a building collapse near Wat Traimit Witthayaram Worawihan (Temple of the Golden Buddha) on Charoen Krung Road. Firefighters and rescue teams from the Suan Mali station were dispatched immediately.
Officers arrived at the scene by 4:57 p.m. Preliminary findings showed that a large concrete panel/overhang on the second floor of the old building had given way and fallen, striking a male pedestrian. Rescue workers and volunteers worked quickly to lift the heavy slab off the victim.
By around 5:20 p.m., the unidentified man’s body was successfully recovered and transported to Rajvithi Hospital. No other injuries were immediately reported in the initial dispatches.
The incident occurred in a historic and busy commercial area of Bangkok’s Chinatown vicinity, close to the prominent Wat Traimit temple, which houses the world-famous Golden Buddha statue. Authorities have cordoned off the site as a danger zone while police and forensic teams, along with district officials from Samphanthawong, investigate the structural failure. Engineers are expected to examine the building’s condition to determine the exact cause, which has not yet been officially confirmed but is believed to involve deterioration of the aging structure.
Local media and the Rama 199 command center described the event as a “tragic structural collapse” involving a second-floor concrete element. Some reports noted debris falling onto the street, with at least one vehicle reportedly damaged.
