Pattaya, Thailand– Hundreds of Pattaya residents from all walks of life gathered at the Blue Sky event area at Bali Hai Pier to launch the “SAVE PATTAYA” campaign, designed to defend the city’s reputation and international image following controversial comments made on a television program.
Business owners, local entrepreneurs, politicians, taxi drivers, and civil society groups turned out in force for the event, which organizers described as a show of solidarity to counter what they see as damaging and incorrect portrayals of Pattaya.
Participants called on academic Sirot Klamphaibun and television presenters involved to issue a public apology to the people of Pattaya, saying the content and controversial statements made by him had unfairly harmed the city’s image as a world-class family friendly tourist destination.
Speakers at the rally strongly rejected negative stereotypes, repeatedly stressing that “Pattaya is not a lawless city and there is no mafia here.” They also stressed that local politics in Pattaya have never involved violence during elections, urging the public not to generalize or spread misleading narratives about the city.
The event proceeded peacefully throughout, with officers from Pattaya City Police Station on hand to facilitate the gathering and ensure safety and order.
Organizers said the campaign was necessary to set the record straight and protect the livelihoods of residents who depend on Pattaya’s reputation as a major international tourist hub.
