Hat Yai College in Songkhla has stepped up security measures after an alarming incident involving a former South African teacher who once taught in the school’s English Program. On Saturday (August 8th) the ex-teacher had posted messages and images of firearms online, sparking widespread concern among students, parents, and staff.
Police at Hat Yai station confirmed, however, that the individual left Thailand on July 19, 2026, crossing the border at Padang Besar. Authorities are continuing to review evidence and verify the circumstances surrounding the online threats.
On August 9th, the school announced heightened safety protocols, including closing all entry and exit gates and deploying security personnel across the campus. Patrol officers from Hat Yai Police have also been assigned to monitor the area, hoping to reassure the school community.
To minimize risk, Hat Yai College will shift to online learning on August 10–11 while administrators meet to assess the situation and plan further responses. The school director has already filed a police report regarding the firearm images and threatening messages, requesting an investigation into possible legal violations.
Meanwhile, allegations posted by the former teacher on TikTok and Reddit, covering salary disputes, social security contributions, contract deposits, budget management, and labor rights, remain under review. The school has issued a statement denying several claims.
Parents and students have expressed unease but say they trust the combined efforts of the school and police to maintain safety.
Meanwhile the Songkhla Immigration Chief has confirmed that the former teacher had left Thailand and Immigration checkpoints have reportedly flagged the suspect for detainment and questioning should he attempt to return.
